Selling, taming, and documenting California

March 10, 2016

The California State Library Foundation Bulletin (#114) is available in a full-color pdf on our website.

California agriculture, transportation, and fine photography are just some of the topics highlighted in this issue. The California History Section’s Elena Smith provides an overview of the clever ways in which postcards were used to market California’s agricultural prowess in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Los Angeles. Artist and restoration expert Eddy Hood entertains readers with stories gleaned from the newly acquired Bayliss archive, a time capsule of early mining, construction, and agriculture in northern California, c. 1870s – 1920s. Foundation Executive Director Gary Kurutz writes fondly of the late Tom Vano, World War II veteran and celebrated San Francisco photographer, whose striking works have found a permanent home at the California State Library. The issue includes our regular Foundation News and Notes, and a sampling of recent acquisitions.

As with all of our back issues, hard copies are available for sale here, and are free to our members.
